Letters: Fair play at the Leveson inquiry

Rhodri Davies QC, counsel appearing in The Times and The Sunday Times before Lord Justice Leveson on his advisers and six (report, May 15), complained that Robert Jay QC, counsel to the Leveson inquiry acted "against the rules" for a public inquiry into making statements of a witness (Rupert Murdoch) after giving evidence at the inquiry. I know of no rule that defines the role and function of lawyers is responsible for submitting the name of a public inquiry. Investigations Act 2005 (in which Lord Justice Leveson conducts research) provides in Article 17 that the procedure and the conduct of the investigation "must be such that the Chair may order" and any decision he or she "must act fairly." if - what appears to be the case - Mr. Jay was but a spokesman for Lord Justice Leveson and an opinion expressed by the prosecutor of the court could question the impartiality of the survey
But in my experience to lead and participate in public consultations, the lawyer of the court always has a discretion as to how it fulfills its task of providing the testimony of witnesses and observations to assist the process of obtaining the true facts considered. Counsel for Mr Rhodri Davies QC appears as a 'key player' Lord Justice Leveson to exercise their right to a hearing to answer the criticisms of Mr. Jay (if applicable). It is quite right. But Mr Davies is, in my opinion, wrong to protest Mr. Jay acting inappropriately.

Watergate: did Ben Bradlee doubt Woodward and Bernstein? | Oliver Burkeman

book suggests Jeff Himmelman crusade editor of the Washington Post had a crisis of faith in its journalists. Page 'Deep Throat'

If the dog focused exclusively on what passes for presidential scandal today want something more substantial, that everyone suddenly again Watergate may seem strange, pleasant. Thomas Mallon has a new novel, Robert Redford has announced it is working on a new documentary Watergate - and draw a book recently published in the New York, former research assistant Bob Woodward, Jeff Himmelman made some statements that raise the eyebrows of any former employer.

Like everything that has to do with the Watergate scandal, the details are quite complex, the central claim - contained in a note from 1972 Himmelman discovered in an old box of documents - is that one of the main sources of Woodward and Bernstein, called - inevitably - "Z" was in fact a grand jury in the case burglarly, a fact disguised

All the President's Men

. (Go to a grand jury might well have landed in prison.) But the most striking is the suggestion that Himmelman Ben Bradlee, editor of Crusade couple in the Washington Post, had doubts about their accounts to meet famous Deep Throat in an underground garage, organize meetings with a secret system of signals involving a flower pot on the balcony of the apartment Woodward. Bradlee request:

Is [factory] Problem pot never happened? Meeting ... and a garage. A meeting room in the garage? Fifty meetings in the garage? I do not know how many meetings in the garage ... There is a residual fear in my soul that is not easy.

Why the Olivier awards show up the West End's weak spots

Only a handful of Olives were rewarded for a derivative work of the commercial sector - which shows that the West End is just show interesting productions, not create

At least I have a good thing. Interviewed by Radio 2 to predict the headlines in the morning after Olivier Awards, suggested "Matilda waltzes win Olivier". I do not think anyone actually used this specific line (although one of the news agencies came close, but it was the general sense. Similarly artist has dominated the Oscars this year, so we went with Matilda seven Oliviers I have no problem with that - except maybe .. there is something vaguely surreal story by Roald Dahl is a hymn to the pleasures of solitary reading became a big market dazzling masses music

That the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) has become really good at it is self-advertisement. I was not at the ceremony on Sunday night (not going to lose this country), but Julian Bird, SOLT chief executive, said it was "probably the most important one night without sleep nobody has ever done. "But, Olives why they feel compelled to compete with the Broadway Tony Awards or Oscars? I remember when they started these gala dinner consisted of a ceremony very nice and modest Café Royal: a very British, informal occasion. now they have become part of the standard showbiz razzmatazz., but that in itself shows how the West End has opted for a model to Broadway. less will shout, creatively, more noise feels compelled to do

A woman told Leeds Crown Court this week was buried alive in a box. This is a scenario that evokes our most primal fears

Michelina Lewandowska

paralyzed Leeds Crown Court this week, he described clawing your way through 10 cm or more above the ground after being buried alive in a cardboard box. To allay the fears of the population, Victorian England and inventors also patented boxes with snorkels as the periscope and fragile glass panels fanfare associated above ground and automatic warning devices that detect movements chest. And even today, almost errors occur: last year alone, a beekeeper of 76 years, Polish, Josef Guzy, declared dead after a heart attack, narrowly escaped being buried alive in a weak pulse been regarded as his coffin was sealed. Be warned.

Conrad Murray jury to consider verdict

doctor denies manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson in Los Angeles in 2009

A jury in Los Angeles will begin deliberations in the case of Michael Jackson's doctor on Friday after a six-week murder trial in the death of the pop star in 2009.

Finally, arguments prosecutors said Jackson "paid with his life" for the criminal negligence of Dr Conrad Murray. Defense lawyers said Murray was to be responsible for his own actions Jackson.

"For a crime must be proved, the prosecution must show that Dr Murray actually killed Michael Jackson," said defense attorney Ed Chernoff jury Thursday.

"They want to convict Murray for the actions of Michael Jackson," Chernoff said. "If it was none other than Michael Jackson, that the doctor be here today?"

Chernoff asked the jury to remember that the victim was a pop star. "If you're going to hold Dr. Murray responsible, do not do it because it's Michael Jackson. This is not a reality show. This is the reality."

Jackson was found dead at his home in Los Angeles June 25, 2009. It was then decided to have died from an overdose of propofol, which is normally used in surgery, and sedatives.

The defense argued that the singer was dependent on propofol. Desperate to sleep, probably gave a lethal dose of the powerful anesthetic, as well as swallowing a handful of sedatives, without the knowledge of Murray, defense lawyers argued.

Attorney David Walgren
"The evidence in this case is very clear - that Conrad Murray acted with criminal negligence, that Conrad Murray caused the death of Michael Jackson, Conrad Murray let Prince, Paris and Blanket without a father, "the prosecutor said, referring to the singer's three children.
